Devotional - Feb. 5, 2025
Scripture: Philippians 8:4 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
So we finished them up, the fruit of the Spirit being love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control (Galatians 5: 22-23). Not easy and downright impossible without God, but let them always abide deep in your soul. They are where God is leading us day by day. When you work on them, do so in prayer. You can single a few out to focus on or take a step back and see them as a whole, either is fine. Let me ask you a question, what kind of person do you imagine encompassing all these traits? By the grace of God, that is the person you are seeking to be. In this pursuit, one will never make it far being judgemental or perfectionistic, especially on oneself. Prayerfully, seek to understand what causes you to struggle. Find reputable sources and research the various personal issues you face. It will only make you a better person to others, God, and, as crazy as this sounds, to yourself. Paul encourages the Philippians to mind their mind and attitude. Advice we all could use to hear from time to time. It is easy to succumb to our negativity and be overcome with all kinds of anxious and disparaging thoughts. It makes for an easy alternative to persevering which takes grit, but change only comes through perseverance. Paul shares the standard that keeps him moving forward. If it is not true or noble, right or pure, loving or worthy of being admired or praised, then ...nope. If you need one, it is a good standard to adopt. Just remember, all of this is possible because of your relationship with God. You know the grandness of God and the riches entailed in your relationship with God (Philippians 4: 5-7).
Pray with me..., Holy God, at times, we are tempted to seek ways of thinking and being that are not what You call us to. Quiet our spirit with Yours. Help us to focus on dealing with the issues we face each day, knowing, You are with us. Be with our loved ones, we pray. Bless them according to their needs and be with our church. Guide us O God, so we can be the people you call us to be, in Jesus name, Amen.
